The 19th International AIDS Conference kicked off with a rousing opening session emphasizing this unique moment in AIDS history, when the tools to “turn the tide” against the epidemic—including treatment as prevention and PrEP—are in our hands.

Speaking of the need for renewed commitment to ending HIV/AIDS, conference co-chair Diane Havlir of the University of California at San Francisco sent this message to policymakers: “Invest in science, invest in this epidemic, and you will change lives.” Calling for advocates, care providers, and policymakers to take advantage of these tools now, Executive Director of UNAIDS Michel Sidibé urged, “This opportunity will evaporate if we do not act.”

See these key presentations and others from day one of AIDS 2012 for yourself! Below is a sampling of webcasts of the opening plenary and pre-conference sessions, provided by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.
